The Japanese Ring movie came out in 1998. I had only seen the 2002 remake and I loved it. I had re-watched it relatively recently and it had held up quite well so I expected to really like the Japanese version.
However like The Cure, the movie was extremely slow and it didn't really do much jump scares. The music and sounds were all muted and it seems like Japanese horror focuses largely on being atmopshere.
We actually stopped watching the movie halfway as it was dull and I was beginning to yawn. The remake was very much a beat for beat remake but it added in sound effects and music to heighten the tension and creepiness. I think I'm used to that style of horror and so this just doesn't click with me.
The biggest difference is that in this version the main character is the mother of the boy child. In the remake she's the aunt who's adopted the child. I wonder why the difference was made.
Watching The Cure and now The Ring, I'm seeing a pattern. I still want to watch Audition. After that maybe something modern as well to see if that's something more up my alley.
I can tell that the Ring movie is great, maybe in another mindset, I'd love it.
